Ashford is thrilled to be a part of Oasis Wellness Center as a Massage Therapist!
She completed her massage training as a part of working toward her Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the American Academy of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) in Roseville, Minnesota. She is expected to complete her program in acupuncture in 2020.
Within this program, she has learned principles of this holistic medicine using application of “Tui Na” massage, a type of Chinese medical massage that activates movement of “qi and blood,” relaxes muscles, tendons, and helps to calm and focus the mind. It is a wonderful complementary approach to Chiropractic care, as both modalities act on the Neuroendocrine system to aid the body in natural balance and wellness.
Ashford loves working with all kinds of patients, and has a great deal of experience in massage therapy for the elderly, insomnia and stress, as well as for auto and athletic injuries. Her massage therapy techniques include: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Tui Na, Cupping, and Gua Sha (scraping).
Ashford has always had an interest in natural health and how the body functions. She grew up in Medina, Minnesota, on a hobby farm where she helped her Master Gardener father test tomato varieties for the U of M, spending much of her summers in the garden; and helped raise all kinds of animals including; horses, cows, pigs, chickens and geese. For much of her youth, she wanted to be a Veterinarian, when at the age of 8, she changed her plan to go to medical school.
After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Physiology at the University of Minnesota, through life circumstance and a shift in her personal philosophy, she ultimately found her calling in TCM, where she could now combine her love of natural health, gardening, neuroscience, and a holistic approach to her practice of Massage Therapy, and someday soon; Acupuncture.
She is happy to work with you, and help you meet your health and wellness needs!
I grew up in Bloomington, MN. After several years of post high school education, and nine years as an assistant director at a Montessori preschool, I decided it was time to pursue a career in massage therapy (something I had been considering for the past 10 years). I recently graduated, top of my class, from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington. I have training in Swedish relaxation, cross fiber friction and therapeutic massage. I hope to continue my education in neuromuscular therapy, pediatric massage and hospice massage.
My ideal client is someone who is experiencing stress-related tension and looking for a full body relaxation massage to someone who is experiencing acute/chronic discomfort and looking for a more focused, deep tissue massage. It’s been said that I have “healing hands”. I use this gift, along with my intuition, to perform slow, specific work, allowing the tissue to “melt” under the pressure, reaching deeper layers of tissue.
My passion for massage therapy derives from the aspect of problem solving. Every body is unique, and therefore requires a unique approach. Deciding on a treatment and seeing that treatment improve one’s symptoms is very satisfying.
Massage is a perfect complementary health practice to both conventional and alternative medicine and one of the best ways of practicing self-care!
I was educated as a Massage Therapist at the Minnesota School of Cosmetologist and Massage. I have also passed the National, Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination. I became interested in massage at a young age, when my mother began suffering from stiff and sore neck muscles. My hands have always been warm, so one day I began massaging her neck muscles. The results of my warm, untrained, yet eager to help hands, were amazing. I was able to see the relief that my hands could bring to someone who is suffering.
Fast forward to 2018, I find myself cultivating a new career in the very skill that intrigued me all those years before. I now understand exactly how massage benefits the body and mind. I can also combine my previous license in education, to share the knowledge I have gained, to help my clients better understand how to keep healthy.
In conjunction with massage therapy, I am also interested in aromatherapy, essential oils, living synthetic chemically free, and natural medicine.
I have been enjoying meeting the people in the Cottage Grove community, and I hope to continue to positively impact the people I meet. Massage therapy is such a fabulous way to be proactive in building a healthy lifestyle.
I hope to see you soon at the Oasis Wellness Center!
