I understand the impulse completely. But I want to name it plainly: that's guessing. And guessing is not just ineffective — it can be counterproductive and, with some nutrients, even harmful. Vitamin D: The Textbook Case
Vitamin D is the clearest illustration of sufficient-versus-optimal, so it's worth walking through.
The conventional definition of vitamin D "sufficiency" is a blood level above 30 ng/mL. So a person who tests at 31 or 32 gets told they're "normal" and sent on their way — even if they feel exhausted. But many functional and integrative practitioners aim considerably higher — often around 50 ng/mL — targeting whole-body health rather than the bare minimum needed to protect bone.

I want to be honest about the science here, because credibility depends on it: the benefit of vitamin D levels above the deficiency threshold is an area of genuine, ongoing debate, not settled fact. What isn't debated is the underlying principle — that "just barely in range" and "optimal" are not the same place.
